40 Years of R. John Wright Dolls

R. John Wright Pocket TiggerFrom Winnie-the-Pooh to Kewpie and Beatrix Potter, R. John Wright has created a variety of classic dolls since the 1970s. With many pieces based on well-known children’s stories, these dolls are a beautifully crafted reminder of childhood memories. Founded by John Wright and his wife Susan, the company has focused on creating high-quality dolls inspired by literature and nature.

Wright’s first dolls were designed in his Brattleboro, Vermont apartment in 1976 and were created in a simple felt design. Sold in area craft stores, John and Susan worked to make improvements on each batch and were able to create a doll with joints and sophisticated detailing over the course of the next six months. As their home transformed into a doll factory, the couple created the “Character Dolls” and “Little Children” series – both of which boasted hand-painted faces and detailed apparel.

In 1985, R. John Wright Dolls, Inc. teamed up with the Walt Disney Company, developing a line of Winnie-the-Pooh dolls. A huge hit, these Hundred Acre Wood inspired pieces have become a cornerstone of the business, with new editions being created throughout the years. More licensed Disney characters followed the Winnie-the-Pooh dolls, including Snow White, Cinderella and Mickey Mouse.

R. John Wright GolliwigAs the company expanded, so did their array of doll collections. The RJW Bears and RJW Mice are two of the most extensive collections, with new characters still being released today. John Wright Dolls are exquisite collector pieces that remind us of our favorite childhood tales and characters.
